Born in San Augustine County, Texas, Orlando Thacker Hanks (1844-1926) was the son of Horatio McMullen Hanks (b. 1803) and Nancy Katherine Thacker (b. 1824). On February 11, 1847, Hanks married Susan Purnell Thacker, with whom he had at least ten children. Near the outbreak of the Civil War, Hanks joined Captain Benjamin Franklin Benton’s Company K of the First Texas Infantry in Hood’s Brigade, which became a part of the Northern Army of Virginia. James Barron Hope was born 23 March 1829 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the grandson of Commodore James Barron (1769-1851) and son of Wilton Hope and Jane Armistead (Barron) Hope (1791-1862).
